Community Space

Picture of a community meeting space

As part of its 2024–2029 Council Plan, Chichester City Council has been exploring options for a new community space in the South Ward. Feedback from residents highlighted a strong demand for improved community facilities, particularly in the Florence Park and Whyke/Kingsham areas.

Why It’s Needed

A recent survey and consultation event showed that:

  • 74% of respondents are willing to walk up to 20 minutes to a community centre.
  • Residents are most interested in spaces for a community café, wellbeing and fitness activities, arts, clubs, and meetings.
  • Existing facilities are limited in size, accessibility, and location, with none fully meeting community needs.

What’s Planned

The Council, working closely with local representatives and community groups, proposes:

  • Two new community spaces – one in the east (Florence Park area) and one in the west (Kingsham/Whyke).
  • The eastern site, near Florence Park, is most viable in the short term. Plans are being developed to redevelop the Sea Cadet site, in partnership with the Sea Cadets and possibly local charities.
  • The western site (Kingsham/Whyke) currently has no deliverable land available, but the Council will advocate for community spaces to be included in future development plans at the High School and Police Recreation Ground sites.

Next Steps

Plans for the Florence Park area will explore:

  • A multi-use community hall shared with the Sea Cadets.
  • Flexible meeting rooms, a café, and sports space.
  • Potential collaboration with charities to co-locate community services.

The City Council remains committed to delivering accessible, inclusive, and well-used community spaces that serve all residents of the South Ward.
