West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service will once again be hosting its Virtual Open Day on Friday 20 August.

Support for students opening their results

West Sussex County Council has released the following information to support students opening their exam results this August.

Watch a video of one of our careers advisors Tania speaking about ways the team support young people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr-aoa9XWCs

Students in West Sussex will be opening their A/AS Level and GCSE results two days apart this week after overcoming another hugely disrupted academic year.

Results day for A levels and other vocational courses is Tuesday, 10 August 2021, with GCSE results day on Thursday 12 August. Exams were cancelled for a second year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, so students will be awarded teacher assessed grades.

Nigel Jupp, Cabinet Member for Learning and Skills, said: “I want to congratulate every West Sussex student, even before they have opened their results, for the resilience and determination they have again shown this year. Many of you will have completed your course almost entirely through the pandemic, studying remotely and without the motivation of being with your friends or teachers, and without the opportunity to sit exams.

“I also want to thank every teacher and school staff member for finding new and innovative ways of supporting our young people, while doing everything you can to keep them safe and able to learn.

“The very best of luck to everyone opening your results and please remember, even if you don’t get the grades you wanted, there are many options open to you and lots of support and advice is available.”

Careers advisors from West Sussex County Council are available to offer one-to-one support to any young person who needs them.

They will be able to discuss your situation and help you consider your options.

You can contact the careers team by calling 0330 222 2700 or email careersadvice@westsussex.gov.uk

For those planning to go to University, the government has advised that universities may accept lower grades than expected and individuals are advised to make contact with them directly.

Emotional wellbeing support is also available for children and young people experiencing mental health difficulties in West Sussex, either linked to exam results or for other reasons. Those who are in need of help are encouraged to explore the wide range of advice and guidance available, and to seek wider professional help if needed.

Councillor of the year nomination – Councillor Richard Plowman

Richard Plowman

Chichester City Council is very pleased to announce that Councillor Richard Plowman has been named as a finalist in the prestigious National Association of Local Councils’ (NALC) Star Council Awards, 2021.

Councillor Plowman has been selected as a finalist in the 2021 Councillor of the Year category.

NALC’s Star Council Awards are the only awards in England to recognise and celebrate the contribution local (parish and town) councils make to their communities.

The awards are a fantastic opportunity for local councils, councillors, clerks and county associations to showcase how they have made a real difference locally.

The theme of this year’s awards focused on projects that have positively impacted communities in the context of Covid-19.

The winners will be announced at an online ceremony in October.

On receiving the news, Councillor Plowman said:

“To be selected as one of only 5 Finalists from the 100,000 parish and town councillors represented by NALC is an honour and very humbling. It is the equivalent of getting a nomination for an Oscar or a medal in the Olympic games in the Local authority world! However, what is most important it nationally recognises Chichester City Council and the people of Chichester for how they stepped up during the Pandemic to meet the challenge.”

Cycling Without Age comes to Chichester

A great new service has launched in Chichester – Cycling Without Age.

The service aims to help “the elderly and isolated to get back outside and be part of the Chichester community” by providing piloted trishaw cycle rides and “helping passengers to feel the wind in their hair once again.”

With the purchase of the trishaw supported by a New Homes Bonus grant from Chichester City Council, the specially built bicycle allows two passengers to be piloted by a volunteer around their local community.
