On the evening of Thursday, 6th January 2025, Chichester City Council hosted the 38th Annual Awards. It celebrates the people and places that have had a positive impact on the residents of Chichester.

Anthony Tunnell was awarded the Civic Award for his exceptional dedication to the 12th Chichester Scout troop. Twenty years ago, when the troop lacked a leader, Anthony stepped in and revitalised it. Since then the troop have achieved significant milestones, with active participation in both district competitions and county camps. Anthony’s commitment has benefited both the group and the district, earning him this well-deserved recognition.

The Small Business Awards is a new category, which is presented to a local, independent business that has positively contributed to the community and economy of Chichester.

Fitting that description, Fenwicks Café in Priory Park, owned by Rob and Dawn Bunker, received the Small Business Award. They have transformed the café into a community hub over the past ten years. Their dedication to improving the park and supporting its residents has made them an integral part to the community.

Café Paradiso, known for its high-quality, homemade vegetarian food and warm community spirit. Offers a welcoming space and a vibrant menu that attracts regulars, residents, and tourists alike. Originally opened by Sarah and David Crowley, and later taken over by Laura and Mat Hayler, the café has become a cornerstone of the city.

Arts, Science and Culture Award, another new category recognising contributions to the local arts, science and culture experience in the city of Chichester.

Chichester Fringe CIC earned this honour for supporting grass roots artists and providing opportunities for local and regional performers. Starting in 2001 as an online festival during COVID, it has since grown into an in-person event. The festival is free to enter and is run entirely by volunteers, ensuring continued growth and investment in Chichester’s arts scene.

The Theatre Department at the University of Chichester, and The ShowRoom have been pivotal in Chichester’s cultural landscape since the early 2000s. They provide an accessible platform for new and experimental theatre, nurturing artists whose work has gained international acclaim. Their commitment to artist development, innovative programming, and student support has made them deserving recipients of the Arts, Science and Culture Award.

This year four organisations were awarded a Community Award. One of which was the Volunteers at St Wilfrid’s Hospice. An independent charity providing high-quality care for over 35 years. It is supported by roughly 600 volunteers, contributing 4,500 hours monthly, to help to bridge the funding gap. Their hard work and dedication significantly impact the hospice and the local community, making this award a fitting recognition of their efforts.

Sophie’s Legacy, created in memory of Sophie Fairall, has improved the lives of young patients and their families at St Richard’s Hospital. The charity supports the Children’s Unit, Special Care Baby Unit, and children’s A&E, with essential resources, funding, and emotional support.

Home-Start, a dedicated charity in Chichester, supports families with young children facing various challenges, including poverty, domestic abuse, and mental health issues. Volunteers provide weekly in-home support, as well as free trips and meals.

Despite being a young organisation, Chichester Pride has made significant strides. It hosted its first in-person event in 2022 and the city’s first Pride parade in 2024. They have earned official charity status and made Pride a prominent feature of Chichester’s annual events calendar.

The Annual City Council Awards are a testament to the vibrant and caring community in Chichester. They not only recognise the efforts of those who go above and beyond but also inspire others to contribute to the city’s well-being.
